Discover the backcountry

Slip into the traditional way of exploring the backcountry on wider cross-country skis, designed for easy access to the wilderness and effortless travel through gentle terrain.

Our Backcountry Crosscountry Trips

Backcountry cross-country skiing sits somewhere between classic cross-country skiing and ski touring. The skis are wider and more stable than regular cross-country skis, making them well suited for leaving the prepared tracks behind and travelling across snow-covered fields, through quiet forests and into the open Arctic landscape.

You don't need to climb a mountain to experience the backcountry.

Your guide & the area

We'll choose a suitable beginner area around Tromsø based on the weather & snow conditions. If you're an experienced skier, then look for a private session.

We'll start by getting comfortable with the equipment and learning the basic techniques needed to move efficiently through the snow. From there, we head into the landscape at a relaxed pace, with plenty of time to enjoy the surroundings.

Along the way, we'll find a sheltered place to stop, light a small bonfire and warm up with a cup of hot chocolate. Then we put the skis back on and continue our journey through the winter landscape.

The focus isn't on covering as many kilometres as possible. It's about learning how to travel through the Arctic winter on skis and enjoying a simple day outside.

Who is it for?

This experience is suitable for anyone who wants to explore beyond the groomed cross-country tracks without committing to a full ski-touring day in the mountains.

Some previous skiing experience is helpful, but you don't need to be an experienced cross-country skier. Your instructor will introduce you to the equipment and techniques along the way.

We travel in easy terrain and adapt the distance and pace to the group and the conditions.

When?

The snow comes when it comes, but we start offering our trips from early November.

Backcountry cross-country skiing trips can be arranged as a day or night activity depending on your wishes.

Where does the trip take place?

Our  bookable day trips are arranged outside of Tromsø, approximitely 30 minutes drive from the city center.

The transfer to the meeting point is your own responsibility.

Take your family with you!

Dress up the children warm enough for a good day out, let's add sleds to the equipment pack and all of a sudden we have ourselves a propper family adventure with wedging and bonfires at the lunch spot.
